The artwork is truly beautiful. The Eternal Resonance by Sweven. Proggy and noodly, spacious, a little bit jazzy, a little bit weird. The vocals and the generally live-feeling and elastic energy and sound as well as the pacing and variety of both the individual tracks and the record as a whole put an emotional zing into the music that makes it really engaging.
A real stand out in the many cross-genre proggy metal acts out there! Proto-Blood Incantation, Proto-Tomb Mold, Proto-Nucleus, proto-any good modern sci-fi death metal band that's getting a lot of love these days. You could dramatically increase the price and it would still be a steal of a compilation. Scream Bloody Gore Reissue by Death. Bandcamp Daily your guide to the world of Bandcamp.

Together, this quartet recorded Hopeless Hopes as a concept album looking into the human state of mind. Now, to the music! There is hardly anything bad that can be said about this album in terms of production, tone, and overall sound.
For a debut release, nothing but kudos can be given to this band for clarity, yet heaviness that this album exudes. There is a edginess to the sound, like juggling with knives and cleavers. It is full of sharp riffs, sharp fills, and yet sharper contrasts in the melody section.
The bass playing is fantastic and to this listener's ears sounds alot like a mixture between Steve Digorgio on Death's Sound of Perserverance and Lars Norberg's bass playing on Spiral Architech's Sceptic's Universe album. The drums are excellently mastered.
Every tom, crash, and snare beat is given its due. The double bass could possibly be mixed slightly louder but who could tell with all the stuff happening here. Compositionally there are some fantastic songs on this album.
The title track is fantastic with a fantastic melody. The Blind's Reflection truly expresses the scope of playing and ability that this band brings to the table. Elementals is a hard hitting track with an awesome intro showcasing not only the twisted harmonies that adorn this album in every nook and cranny but also the ability to integrate simpler rhythms into the complicated style of their music.
The one song that I felt did not stand up to the rest of the album's material was Ostrogoth which was less complex, less involved, and more of a straight foward thrash song. Of course, this song was written earlier along with two other tracks on this album however those two songs, Prototype and Ars Nova seemed to fit better onto this album. As a debut album this presented the metal community with a look into a band that would release future awesome albums such as Warp Zone and Feeding The Abscess.
Brilliant music. Martyr have created a unique sound for themselves. They have taken a big influence by Florida Death Metal bands such as Death, Atheist and Cynic, but have given it that french Canadian twist and an arsenal of catchy riffs and memorable moments the listener isn't likely to forget. From the first bars of the title track to the end of the record, it's all finesse.
From the basslines to the drum fills, without skipping the jazzy guitar solos and time changes, there's something special about this band. Daniel Mongrain, besides beng a world class guitarist, also has a unique vocal style that meshes very well with this band. It's a low vocal range that isn't a typical death metal growl.
He is very easy to understand and you get used to the vocals after a while. The riffs are amzing, the solos are absolutley out of this world. And it all goes by so smoothly and without a hitch. These guys are truly remarkable musicians. All the other tracks are killer as well. Dan Mongrain is a genius.
It's a fact. He plays or played for 5 different bands, and it's no coincidence that all the five bands are groundbreaking and original death metal bands. This album is unlike any other album that I have ever heard. When I first heard this, I didn't like it at all. But after certain repeated listens, it got much better, and finally I think I could digest the beauty enveloped inside this amazing album. For Martyr, Dan takes up the role of vocalist also, and I must say that even though it took some time to get into his vocals, I love them now.
He has a very deep voice, but you can make out what he's trying to say. Dare I say, he even sounds a tad metalcore-ish. You can make out a Martyr song, by his vocals. The music on Hopeless Hopes is not overtly complex like many other tech death metal bands. As mentioned Martyr is very influenced by the legendary tech death metal band Death.
The riffing and jazz influenced drumming is very much in the same vein as Death. The vocals on Hopeless Hopes is a study in itself. I have a tendency to complain about the vocals on many tech death metal releases as I think too many bands use the very deep subwoofer or cookie monster vocals if you will.
On Hopeless Hopes the vocals are sublime and thankfully pretty varied. On Hopeless Hopes and Inner Peace which are the most Death inspired songs on Hopeless Hopes the vocals sound very much like Chuck Schuldiner, while the vocals on other tracks sound like a young Glen Benton from Deicide.
There are even some more hardcore call and respons vocals in a song like Elementals. The production is pretty good though. I will only rate Hopeless Hopes 3 stars.
